Bailey Mill

Information on Bailey Mill is relativley scarce and very hard to come by. All we have managed to reveal is that the mill was built in three seperate stages in the 1800s. With new sections being added to each time.

Apart from that we know nothing else apart from the fact that the mill was part of the textile industry around Oldham and produced fine quality fabrics up until the mill relocated further up the road in Delph.

The strange thing is that half of the original looms and machinery are still in situ, scattered through out the mill.

Access to the mill is tricky to say the least and at best very dangerous with some rather severe drops in places. Apart from that, it is worth the effort to see what it holds inside.

Sadly the outer buildings which where possible to explore until recently, house the offices and are now well and truly sealed with no access at all. The same applies to some of the outer workshop areas too, leaving only the mill itself now accessible.

From what we did see of the sealed buildings they didnt look that interesting anyway. So it was no great loss not seeing them.

Once inside you notice virtually every floor is strewn with cotton bobbins of every color you can imagine. Theres even the old whicker baskets still in situ that were used to transport fabrics and cotton around the mill.

The most impressive sight in the mill has to be the giant cotton loom on the top floor. Still loaded with cotton and a half woven patch of fabric stuck in between the combs.

The basement also has machinery and is packed wall to wall with even bigger looms than upstairs, as well as other random bits and pieces.

Whilst exploring the mill we discovered an original blueprint of the mill. Which was actually blue. A first for most of us seeing I think.

The last place we explored was the water tower above the main section of the mill. But this was in a bad state as well.

Around two hours where spent exploring the mill. Before we moved onto another explore down the road in Oldham.

The last company to occupy the mill relocated further down the road into Delph. A few years ago.
