Bell Baxter High School
Bell Baxter High School was descended from the Cupar Grammar School. Founded in 1889 when the Madras Academy combined with the Sir David Baxter's Institute for Young Ladies.
Since 1962, the accommodation for the school has been on two main sites; Carslogie Road and Westport.
The Westport building was first used in 1890 with the rest of the building being built in 1929. Because of the large number of pupils using this site a great number of wooden huts were built to accommodate the already over populated school.
The Carslogie Road building was opened in 1962. Over the years there have been on-going refurbishments which has resulted in the school being able to operate from one site.
This particular site closed in 2006, moving to more modern buildings and upto date facilities further up the road.
The one thing which stands out with the school is its one way system it used to operate when it was open. Pupils and staff had to navigate the building via this one way system which covered the entire school. Why is anyones guess but an interesting novelty none the less.
From the outside Bell Baxter looks rather impressive with its solid stone building work and very formal looking blocks. Inside is a little mixed though and not as impressive.
We didnt quite know what to expect at first, and initially thought inside would be relativley bare. But upon venturing further into the site it became aparrent that this wasnt the case. Downstairs is filled with all sorts of items. Typewriters, school books, wood working equipment and so on.
Whilst exploring the staff section of the school we discovered what can only be described as a Flat. Its purpose is some what of a mystery.
The amount of paperwork still in situ was unbelievable. We found hundreds upon hundreds of photographs of students and teachers from school trips from years gone by.
All the information we found though indicated that the school closed sometime in 2006. Considering Bell Baxter has been closed for 3 years its still in exceptional condition and almost intact.
An interesting little explore this one with plenty of things to see.
Update: As of late 2009 work has begun on the school. Its unclear so far if this is renovation work or possibly the start of demolition.
