Chateau Ter Meeren

Chateau Ter Meeren dates back to the 12th century and was added to through out the following centurys. The last bits being built in the 19th century to Flemish styles.

The home of the domain was a medieval castle fortress of the genus "Van Der Meeren" that from the twelfth to the early seventeenth century lived.

During World War II the Chateau was briefly taken over by the Nazis and was looted when they left. It was only in 1974 that a preservation order was placed on the Chateau and its surrounding 8 hectares of land to try and save the it because of its historical values.

Since 2001 local business people and companies have owned or put in bids for the chateau. But none have ever restored it and it has just been left as it was when the last occupants moved out in the 90s.

The residents of the town have signed a petition to save the chateau due to its significent history. Sadly the stables and a few other buildings are slowly falling apart. The chateau itself how ever has stood up to the test of time and is in remarkable condition.

As for its future? Well all I can say is it deserves to be preserved.

We didnt quite know really what to expect here at first. Was it still abandoned? Or had it been restored? It wasnt until we actually arrived that we realised that it was the latter.

First impressions? What can you say other than its stunning. The exterior is an awesome piece of architecture and its design fits into the landscape with ease. Despite it being added to over the years it all seems to fit together rather well.

From the complicated and beautiful ceilings right down to the solid wood panelled walls and floors. The chateau is a truly inspiring place.

The attention to detail is surreal and the craftsmenship which has gone into producing this place is second to none.

After seeing the chateau in person you can appreciate and understand why the local community want to save the place. It really does deserve to be preserved.

In late 2009 renovation work started at the chateau, in an attempt to restore it to its former glory. Something which the place deserves, seems the locals efforts have paid off. Its also pleasing to see that somewhere as impressive as this has been saved.
