Jacobs dates back to 1902 when it was founded by Arthur Irving Jacobs. Who created one of the most significant industrial advancements in the 20th Century.
He had developed the first drill chuck with a toothed sleeve and key. A few months later, he founded what would become The Jacobs Chuck Manufacturing Company.
The keyed chuck helped to transform the production process just at the time when industrial manufacturing was about to experience its most significant growth in modern times.
Today, the concept of the original keyed chuck is an integral part of all drill chuck technology.
It has been applied to a wide range of applications, from the most sophisticated CNC machining to drilling with the smallest cordless portable drill.
Now a part of the Danaher Corporation family of companies. The Jacobs Chuck Manufacturing Company maintains a global presence as a recognized leader in the design manufacture of precision tool and work holding devices for stationary equipment and portable power tools.
When the Troutbeck rd site was built is anyones guess? As for information as to when it was built is sketchy at best, but so far indicates to around WWII. But this is unconfirmed.
When it closed is also a bit of a mystery but by the looks of it I would say a good few years as inside is stripped beyond belief. One section has an entire roof missing.
Although there isnt really a great deal to see inside it does however possess some impressive Grafitti. It seems the factory has been turned into the local Grafitti hall of fame.
If it wasnt for the grafitti the site wouldnt be worth bothering with at all. The grafitti actually adds an atmosphere to the place and gives it a some what a dated and post apocalyptic feel.
Just a shame really there wasnt much in the way of its original fittings still in situ. Given the nature and impressive history of the site its a bit of a let down.
But one comes to expect these things given the nature of what we explore. That said though if your into grafitti this place is definatley worth a look. It has some impressive artwork rather than the usual tagging and mindless scribble you usually find.
