Jamestone Quarry

Jamestone Quarry is a longstanding sandstone quarry covering 60 hectares of the Lancashire countryside. The quarry originally dates back to the turn of the century and has always produced stone and grit products.

Aside from this relativley small piece of history not a lot else can be found of the Quarry aside from Aggregate Industries where the last operators of the quarry up until its closure in 2006.

Since then the site has remained derelict or mothballed as there is still power going to the site and all the machinery is in perfect condition.

The first thing that strikes you upon entering the quarry is the machinery. Looking as if its come direct from a film set from Mad Max or something from a post apocalyptic era.

The machinery covers a fairly large area and has walkways and conveyors all over the show. Sadly the control room is boarded shut. But there is plenty to keep you interested. In some ways the quarry resembles something along the lines of a giant theme park ride.

It does however make for an interesting explore and gives some unique shots.

Looking like a theme park ride though it had to be climbed. After all its rare you get to explore places like these and so have to make the most of the opportunity.

The place has a menacing and desolate feel to it but is pleasing to the eye and its intracacy does make you start to wonder how every piece of equipment works and what it actually does.

The last time Jaff and myself explored a quarry it was less than amusing and resulted in near death. So this was a some what of a more pleasurable experience than our last experience in a quarry.

Quarries are a strange explore and cant really be compared to heavy industrial sites as there is no comparisons really. These places are industry in its rawest first stages, skeletons if you like that where built for a purpose and required to take the most demanding of tasks without compramise.

Places like these are rather superb and are very seldom explored let alone vandalised. I would imagaine alot of this comes down to there remote and desolate locations.

An awesome place and well worth seeing. I have a feeling a few more quarries will be explored after seeing this magnificent site.
