Longcross Barracks.

Longcross Barracks where built sometime in the 1960s - 70s the site was used by the Army Technical Support Agency and then the Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO). The activities on the site were physically and functionally separate from the wider Defence Establishment Research Organisation (DERA) sites.

It has never been a formal barracks housing an Army unit with security provided by and Army unit or with guard duties performed by and Army unit.

The sole purpose of the barracks was as a secure residential accomodation housing unit for Army personnel.

The barracks consist of five buildings:

Building 216 was originally a headquarters for Military Policemen, clerks and then for personnel of the Defence Logistics Organisation.

Building 217 was staff accommodation with males on the ground floor and females on the first floor.

Building 218 was staff accommodation for Senior NCO'S, Sergeants and other ranks with dining room, bar and mess.

Building 219B was the NAAFI with kitchens, bar and recreational rooms.

Building 220 was the security building at the entrance, guard house.

Apart from this, little is known about the role of Longcross. The barracks closed in 2000.

The barracks are located next to the former Chertsey Tank testing facility but never had anything to do with the facility in anyway despite speculation and rumors.

Recently proposals have been put forward to transform the site into a secure residential accommodation for asylum seekers.

Apart from Longcross`s rather elusive past or even reason to exist it doesnt really offer much in terms of interesting, inside is stripped bare in typical MOD style with the exception of a few DLO manuals on using Microsoft Word and Excel which are scattered on the floor in Building 216 and NBC scenarios in building 219B theres nothing else to see.

The only surprising thing that strikes you with Longcross its its immaculate appearrance, considering it has been closed for eight years you would think it only closed a few weeks earlier, apart from the odd window being smashed and things knocked over its almost brand new.
