Mansfield Hospital

Information on when this place actually opened has so far managed to elude us as trying to find out any history on the place so far has come up with a blank, the only thing we are sure of is that Mansfield General & District Hospital closed in 1992 and since then it has laid derelict.

The site itself is a bit odd in regards of its location as it sits right in the middle of a residential area surrounded by houses on every corner.

Since the hospital closed it has been plagued with arson, vandalism, drug users and thieves resulting in the locals keeping a very close eye on the place.

The majority of the site is encompassed in fencing and all the obvious access points sealed tight as one would expect.

But after wandering round the perimeter for some time we did eventualy spot and entry point which was so obvious we missed it the first time round.

Given its history its easy to see why the place has been secured as good as it has as it literally sits on peoples doorsteps. As a resident you can see why there none to keen on undesireables hanging around the place especially since they have to live there.

Not many reports have really come out of this place mainly due to the fact that the residents report anyone who they think is suspicious to the police making exploring somewhat difficult to say the least.

Once inside the grounds though exploring is extremely slow and very tedious the entire ground floor is virtually sealed on a room by room basis not to mention in some cases triple Heras fencing perimeters but once you find the holes in the fences things get easier.

Once you find access the first floor upward is totally unsecured and is full of interesting things.

Jaff and myself spent a good hours exploring this place and came across all sorts of items, everything from bibles to drips, lecture theatres to X-ray machines, hospital records to televisions and wheel chairs.

It wasnt quite what we expected after seeing some of the ground floor rooms but certainly was a pleasent surprise. It has to be the most difficult and most time consuming explores of a hospital we have ever done, at one point we almost gave up!

Although the place is difficult to access it really is worth the effort in every way and well worth going to see.
