Royal Army Ordnance Corp (RAOC) Marchington, was built around 1957 and dealt with the supply and maintenance of weaponry and munitons and various other military equipment until 1993 when the Corp amalgamated with the Royal Logistics Corp.
It was also a Central Vehicle Depot during this time until the barracks closed in 1970, and the Territorial Army took over. Until it finaly closed the site in the early 1980s.
Marchington also housed the Army`s fleet of Green Godesses which came under the jurisdiction of the Office Of The Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM).
Considering the barracks have been closed for going on twenty years plus they are in exceptional condition. Inside is quite bare but theres no real damage or vandalism which is odd as there is a housing estate right next door.
The central barracks building has been recently demolished and all thats left is a big empty space where it once stood.
There is some very strange grafitti inside too and not the work of kids, but this adds considerably to the atmosphere of the place and makes for some very interesting reading.
Marchington gives an eerie presence with its perimeter fencing and symetrical layout. In some ways it reminds you of Chernobyl or some post apocolyptic scene from a film set.
It is a cool place though and very imposing. Its well worth seeing as its gained some what of an iconic status amongst the urban exploring community.
There are rumours of the entire site being demolished to make way for yet more new housing but so far the planning application has not gone through.
When we arrived Storm and myself half expected the barracks to be crawling with kids given the fact its only metres away from a council estate.
Strangley though the entire site was silent and not a sole in sight, an added bonus. Once we had located our access point we headed towards No.4 Barracks which is where we found the rather imaginative and quite lucid grafitti on the walls.
Although the enitre site is practically empty its still an interesting site it terms of its remote and desolate feel.
Not the best site we have explored but its worth a visit if only to see the grafitti.
