Maria Ziekenhuis was originally founded in 1930
by the Sisters of Berlaar of Belgium, in 1931 the hospital opened its doors for the first time with only 9 beds.
For years the hospital only had two surgeons who worked from Tongeren and Hasselt. it was only in 1945 that the hospital established its first permanent doctors.
From 1945 onwards the hospital got busier and busier and needed to be extended. But it wouldnt be until 1951 that a new hospital would be built on its grounds to facilitate its growing needs.
In 1951 the new hospital was finished and now boasted 130 beds. Compared to its original 9 beds it was some what of a needed upgrade.
In the early 60s the hospital expanded again. This time with the addition of an entire new floor and childrens ward which could accomodate 40 beds and 13 single rooms.
The hospital flourished over the coming years but in the early 2000s it was decided that a more modern and larger hospital was needed to accomodate the people of the near by towns.
In 2005 the hospital eventually closed its doors and transferred everything to its new site.
The first report we seen of this place was back in 2007 and it looked amazing. Since then we havent really seen much of it just the odd report here and there, now fast forward to 2009 and myself, Jaff and Mr Bones are planning a trip to europe and we had this place on the list to explore.
Finding the place was a nightmare and we knew nothing of its present condition or even if it was still possible to explore. But with luck and help from Yoze one of the European Explorers we managed to finally see this awesome hospital.
The only thing you can say about this place is epic! And its conditon is beyond words.
For some where thats been closed for nearly 5 years you would literally think its only been closed for 6 months. The condition of this place is out of this world.
I think this has to be the best hospital we have ever explored. It had everything. Operating theatres with equipment, stunning stained glass sculptures and windows and the most amazing Morgue Ive ever seen! And just when we thought it couldnt get better we stumbled across the medical records and X-rays of former patients which had us engrossed for hours.
I would go as far as to say that this is one of the best explores in Europe. Truly stunning!!!
