Montzen Gare Freight Depot was built in 1915 by Russian prisoners captured by the German Army. The station, freight and shunting yard and housing was also built by the prisoners and housed the local residents who would work there for the Belgium railways.
At its time the station was considered some what a work of art and in 1938 recieved an architectural award for the best looking station in Belgium.
During World War II the station was destroyed by allied bombing and completely levelled. After the war the station was rebuilt and hasnt changed to this day.
The majority of Montzen Gare is now derelict but some of the freight lines are still used for shunting occasionally. A few tiny rooms in the station itself have been converted to workshops for local businesses.
The NMBS (Nationale Maatschappij der Belgische Spoorwegen) or SNCB (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Belges) has occupied Montzen since 1926 and still does to this day.
The station finally closed in 1998 and has been derelict ever since. With the exception of a few workshops and the shunting yard the site is mainly derelict and currently up for rent / sale.
We have explored trains in the past over in England but never a derelict station so Montzen Gare was quite a nice surprise.
The length of the place is what first captures your imagination and provides some great shots looking down the platform. With the light beaming through its glass roof it creates some nice atmospheric scenes.
The one thing which we wasnt expecting to see though was people. We entered from the top of the platform and immediatley saw people way down the platform, at first we wasnt sure if it was security or other explorers?
Then one of the mysterious characters waved at us, with that we waved back and ventured down to meet them, turns out they actually owned one of the small workshops there and was working away.
After a few pleasantries we explained the reason why we was there and they were more than happy to let us wander round the place.
Although there isnt a great deal to see here there are a few interesting things still littered around the place like the old commuter train at the entrance and the old carriages and crane laid up further into the station.
An interesting place though and worth a look.
