Beech Caves are located in the scenic countryside of Beech, Staffordshire.
The Caves are cut into the hillside and are a pillar and stall workings red sandstone quarry, sandstone from the caves was used to construct near by Trentham Hall in the 17th century.
The Caves are of geographical importance to the area and are classed as RIGS:
Regionally Important Geological Sites.
Sometime in WWII the Caves where used by the Ministry Of Defence as a small ammunitions dump, since then they have been empty.
Finding information on Beech Caves is almost as frustrating as trying to find them, there is no information on the internet apart from a brief reference to them, local libraries also came up blank.
Actually locating the place is just as bad as there are hardly any road signs in Beech, the actual road the caves are on is not signed so its pretty much hit and miss.
Myself and Storm attempted to find the caves back in April 2007 but had no luck and after two hours aimlessley driving around we eventually gave up and called it a day.
After our first failed attempt back in April our second attempt proved more successful, this time it only took us an hour to find the place.
Its not as big as we had expected but impressive none the less, unfortunatley there is not much to see inside apart from the structural features of the cave, the only indication or clues to its war time use are the purpose built brick platforms which was probably used to stack the ordnance on.
Apart from the brick platforms the caves are completely bare with only grafitti covering the place.
As far as explores go the caves are okay and well worth the visit, we have been wanting to do them for some time so it was worth it for us!
With the caves being regionally important geological structures it looks like they will remain empty for the forseeable future.
Most likely they will continue to get vandalized and covered in more grafitti as they are wide open and having no security or fencing in place, its an open invite to vandals.
As of late December 2007 we have learnt that the National Tactical Centre have applied to use the caves for Fire Arms training for the Military & Police.
