RAF Calveley.

RAF Calveley was opened in 1942 and closed in 1946, its was primary role was as and Advanced Flying Unit and training school.
Raf Calveley is the most complete WWII Airfield in Cheshire and the only remaining one to still have the Watch office building.
Other buildings that remain on the airfield include the fire tender and floodlight trailer garages, the operations and missions room as well as various workshops latrines and air raid shelters scattered across the site.
Sadly the runways where taken up some years ago.
The airfield only had one crash during the war and was due to pilot error on a night exercise luckily there was no fatalities.
Unfortunatley though in 1974 two RAF Harrier jump jets collided in mid air killing the pilots just north of the airfield, as Calvely is used as a turning point for low flying military aircraft.
The buildings themselves have not changed since WWII and still retain some of the electrical fittings, the only thing that is odd is that there are no RAF markings on any of the buildings.
RAF Calveley is the one of only two surviving WWII airfields left in Cheshire, with RAF Croft in Warrington being the second.
Recently Developers have proposed plans to demolish the remaining structures at Calvely to give way for new industrial units.
The remaining structures are in the middle of a now huge industrial complex almost dominated by NWF Boughey, The only other remaining structure left is the Shooting Butt which is at the far end of where one of the old runways was.
This will no doubt be demolished too.
Visited with Storm as this has been on our list of to do sites for some time now, despite being the most complete WWII RAF base in Cheshire, RAF Calveley also has the most amount buildings still remaining.
The watch office, Fire tender garage, floodlight garage, operations room and latrine are all right next to each other.
The workshops, and small hangars are now cow sheds and are spread out well away from the main complex, the only building we didnt see was the shooting butt at the far side of the airfield as we was pressed for time as always.
