St. Thomas Hospital.

St. Thomas Hospital was originally a Victorian Workhouse occupied by the poor people of Stockport, known locally as the "Gruber".
The Workhouse was construced in 1841 and opened on Christmas day the same year, originally it was meant to house 690 inmates but with a slump in the local economy it was soon filled and before long over flowing.
In 1948 when the NHS was formed, the site was transformed and renamed St. Thomas Hospital, from 1948 St. Thomas served the people of Stockport until the NHS finally closed the hospital in 2004.
Just before closing the hospitals main function was for elderly people and people with mental health issues.
The site has been derelict since 2004 and the main admin block is now a Grade II listed building, plans where made to transform the site into new housing but this never happened. Most Haunted shot an episode of the paranormal series on location here too a while back due to its reported Ghosts that roam the site.
Stockport college have now aqquired the entire site and are demolishing sections to make way for new buildings which will incorporate the former hospital into the colleges main grounds.
This has been on the list for so long now I forget but with demolition work already in progress it was now or never to explore the place.
So with that myself and Cyclone headed over to Stockport to finally explore the old place, the first thing that struck us is how big the site actually is, as the front of the site hides everything.
After a few minutes looking for access we where in and the first building we happened across was the morgue, with the biggest freezers any of us have ever seen, enough for 12 bodies at anyone time, the chapel of rest also occupies the same building.
Despite half of the site in rubble there is still plenty to see and so much stuff still in situ its untrue, Computers, Tv`s, Projectors, Medical equipment and records litter the entire site.
Some sections are quite what we expected with the typical peeling paint and general air of decay, but other sections really surprised us, some rooms look almost brand new and are still fully equipped with all sorts of instruments and paper work.
And interesting little site this one with bags of character, just a shame really that Stockport college are demolishing virtually all of it bar the admin block which is Grade II listed.
