Preventorium Dolhain

Preventorium Dolhain was the creation of Jean Van Beneden. Son of the first Medical Director of Borgoumont. Graduated Doctor of medicine, surgery and obstetrics at the University of Liege, Beneden was a genius and Two years later he became the Chief of Hygiene and Bacteriology of the province of Liège.

During 1940 Liege was suffering from almost depression like conditions and Beneden was quick to react, poor medical conditions no food and a general lack of anything posative prompted Beneden to establish the preventorium asking the Belgium government for the funds to build it.

The preventorium was a sanatorium which cared for young people and children with lung disease and tuberculosis.

The preventorium was built in the early 1950s and carried on treating patients up until the ealry 90s when it moved to more upto date facilities. In the following years after its closure the building was transformed by artists into a gallery which displayed their work for around 9 years.

After the artists moved out the preventorium laid derelcit for a number of years until a fire broke some time around 2000. Most of the building was gutted but surprisingly not the structure.

At present the place still sits empty and what looks like an attempt to start converting the place, but it hasnt progressed very far.

Its almost identical to Joseph Lemaire Sanatorium in its architectural design and looks stunning quite frankly, inside is art deco on another level and some amazing marble floors accompany the interior.

Inside wasnt quite what we expected. Virtually everything has long since gone and nearly every room is bare. On the plus side though all the original wrought iron hand rails are still in situ as are the stained glass windows and marble floors.

One odd thing we did come across was an old  1960's Magirus Deutz fire truck slowly rusting away outside. What its doing here is anyones guess but did provide a nice little bonus to explore.

Although the place is empty as you like we did enjoy mooching round the place as it did have a few bits worth seeing. Personally I preferred the exterior and its general look rather than what lay inside.

An interesting place none the less and one I am glad we had the chance to explore. What will become of the place in the near future we dont know but it would be a shame just to leave the place to rot.
