Salve Mater Ziekenhuis was a Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital for women designed by architect Joseph Hachez.

Founded and set up by the ‘Sisters of love’ from Gent on the lands owned by the Counts of Spoelbergh. The hospital was opened by Queen Elisabeth of Belgium in 1926.

The hospital was founded and run by the Nuns but was owned by the University of Leuven to educate its student psychiatrists.

The majority of the hospital closed down in 1997 but a small section is still in use and very active.

The design of the place is quite unique and gives the impression of a small leafy affluent suburb rather than a hospital. Coupled with its heavily wooded and landscaped English style gardens its a winning combination and works very well indeed.

Although a small section of the hospital is in use, the majority of the site is dereclict but it is maintained so well you would never guess it was abandoned.

Once we had established it was abandoned we proceeded into the first building which was quite dilapadated.

This site only gets better the further you venture in, every corner we turned was more impressive and in better condition than the last.

After an hour or so of exploring we entered the main admin building which also houses the Sisters convent, this in itself was stunning, elaborate tiled floors, wooden ceilings, stained glass and balconys. It just couldnt get any better or so we thought!

Hidden away towards the back of the convent we discovered the morgue. Complete with black aprons worn by the mortuary staff. We even found staff uniforms in other sections.

The most incredible find though was in the attic of one of the far buildings which housed many of the patients and some small staff quarters.

The attic was filled with personal items from the last patients. Letters, postcards, photographs, medical records and clothing. We even found the christmas decorations from the last year people were there.

Hospitals always make for an interesting explore but when they have so much in them and are in the condition that Salve Mater is in. Well! It just makes them even better.

An amazing and well preserved site.
