Stockport Clock Tower

Stockport Clock Tower was built in the 1960s when the precinct itself was constructed. The architecture is typical of the era and surprisingly it has stood the test of time.

The Clock Tower has been the focal point of Stockport precinct for going on nearly 50 years. This is the first time we believe since it was erected that restoration work has ever been carried out on it.

The clock tower is a typical example of 60s architecture, and is no appealing looking structure, but it does have a certain charm about it.

Having walked under the clock tower on many occassions I have always wondered what was on top? Its no means the tallest building in Stockport but it does have significant importance to the area and is the focal point to Stockport precinct.

Besides that the last time that work was carried out on the clock tower was when it was erected in the 60s. So the chance of work being carried out on it again in the near future seems pretty slim.

With the opportunity presenting itself on a plate we felt obliged to explore this local landmark.

Access was easier than we originally anticipated and within minutes we where at the top of the scaffolding looking down over Stockport precinct. The strange thing is, its higher than you think and gives some spectacular views over Stockport. You can even see the Beetham Tower in Manchester from here.

The clock face itself was rather disappointing though. We were expecting a room full of clockworks sadly though the mechanism is actually behind the face of the clocks themsleves. Not in a seperate room as we where hoping for.

There is also a laser which is located on the roof of the clock tower which is used when events are hosted in the precinct. Fortunatley it was off when we scaled the clock tower.

As an explore the clock tower was no epic climb, or indeed had exceptional views. For us it was the chance to see one of the town centres landmark buildings and nothing else.

The chances of actually being on top of the tower again are extremely low. So for us it was a once in a life time opportunity. Were also some of very select group of people to have ever seen the insides and roof of this place.
